Laois is next door. Portarlington is on the county boundary and Portlaoise is straight down the M7, so a Laois site is as close to the office as much of Kildare. The engineer who visits is the one who designs the job and signs for it.
Planning applications in the county go to Laois County Council, at Áras an Chontae in Portlaoise, which is also the building control authority. As everywhere, the council expects surface water to be dealt with on the site, and a percolation test is the usual first step for a new house with no public sewer.
Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountmellick, Mountrath, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Durrow and Rathdowney, and the countryside between them.
