# Structural Engineers in Laois

> Structural and civil engineering for homes, farms and developments across Co. Laois, a short drive down the M7 from our office in Newbridge.

Laois is next door. Portarlington is on the county boundary and Portlaoise is straight down the M7, so a Laois site is as close to the office as much of Kildare. The engineer who visits is the one who designs the job and signs for it.

## What we do in Laois

### [Structural Calculations](https://www.petruf.ie/services/structural-engineering/structural-calculations)

Extensions, attic conversions and openings in load bearing walls, with a site visit and a fixed fee quoted first.

### [Surveys and Reports](https://www.petruf.ie/services/structural-engineering)

Pre purchase surveys, condition reports and crack and subsidence reports.

### [Building Regulations Compliance](https://www.petruf.ie/services/consulting-and-compliance/building-regulations-compliance)

Opinions on Compliance, and design and assigned certification under BCAR.

### [SuDS and Drainage Design](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/suds-design)

Soakaways sized from a percolation test, or attenuation where the ground will not take it.

### [Uisce Éireann Connections](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/irish-water-connections)

Connection applications for housing developments, made as your agent.

### [Roads Design](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/roads-design)

Estate roads, entrances and footpaths for housing developments.

### [Flood Risk Assessments](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/flood-risk-assessments)

For sites near the Barrow and the Nore.

### [Feasibility Studies](https://www.petruf.ie/services/consulting-and-compliance/feasibility-studies)

Ground, drainage and access checked before a site is bought or a design is fixed.

## Planning and building control

Planning applications in the county go to [Laois County Council](https://laois.ie/), at Áras an Chontae in Portlaoise, which is also the building control authority. As everywhere, the council expects surface water to be dealt with on the site, and a percolation test is the usual first step for a new house with no public sewer.

## Towns we cover

Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountmellick, Mountrath, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Durrow and Rathdowney, and the countryside between them.

## Questions from the county

### Do you travel to Laois for small jobs?

Yes. Portlaoise is closer to Newbridge than much of Dublin is, and calculations for an extension or an opening include the site visit in the fixed fee. The first call is free, and on it we will say whether a visit is needed at all.

### Can you design the drainage for a new house in rural Laois?

The surface water, yes: soakaways sized from a percolation test, or attenuation where the ground will not take it. A wastewater treatment system for a house with no public sewer is a separate design, and we will tell you on the first call who should do it.
