# Structural Engineers in Maynooth

> Structural and civil engineering for homes and housing schemes in Maynooth and its environs, from our office in Newbridge, about half an hour away.

Maynooth is a university town and one of the two Key Towns in the county, growing on both sides of the boundary with Meath. The office is in Newbridge, about half an hour away, and the engineer who visits is the one who designs the job and signs for it.

We take on extensions, openings, surveys and certification for homeowners in the town, and the roads, drainage and Uisce Éireann connections a housing scheme needs to be built and taken in charge.

## What we do in Maynooth

### [Structural Calculations](https://www.petruf.ie/services/structural-engineering/structural-calculations)

Load bearing walls taken out, extensions and attic conversions, with a site visit and a fixed fee quoted first.

### [Building Regulations Compliance](https://www.petruf.ie/services/consulting-and-compliance/building-regulations-compliance)

Opinions on Compliance for a sale, and design and assigned certification under BCAR.

### [Roads Design](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/roads-design)

Estate roads, entrances and footpaths for housing developments.

### [SuDS and Drainage Design](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/suds-design)

Soakaway tests on site, and surface water designed to the council's SuDS policy.

### [Uisce Éireann Connections](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/irish-water-connections)

The connection applications a new house or a development needs, made as your agent.

### [Flood Risk Assessments](https://www.petruf.ie/services/civil-engineering/flood-risk-assessments)

For sites on the flood maps, by the river or near it, before the design is fixed.

## Planning and building control

[Kildare County Council](https://kildarecoco.ie/) is the planning authority and the building control authority, at Áras Chill Dara on Devoy Park in Naas, and commencement notices are lodged with it through the national [Building Control Management System](https://www.localgov.ie/en/bcms). Maynooth is in the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District.

Since 1 April 2025 the town has been planned under the [Maynooth and Environs Joint Local Area Plan 2025 to 2031](https://kildarecoco.ie/News/MaynoothandEnvironsJointLocalAreaPlan20252031.html), made by Kildare and Meath County Councils together, because the town's environs run across the county boundary. A site on the Meath side is a Meath application, with Meath County Council as its planning and building control authority, even though the plan it is read against is the same one.

## Flooding

The Lyreen River runs through the town, and a flood relief scheme for Maynooth is in the OPW's Flood Risk Management Plans. Until it is built the maps on [floodinfo.ie](https://www.floodinfo.ie/) are the starting point, and a site near the river will be asked about flood risk at planning.

## Housing schemes

Most of the new building in and around Maynooth is housing, and on a scheme the civil engineering is what decides whether the roads, drains and water mains are taken in charge at the end. We design them to the council's standards from the start, and make the Uisce Éireann applications as your agent, so the handover is not a negotiation.

## Questions from the town

### Is my Maynooth site in Kildare or Meath?

Most of the town is in Kildare, but parts of its environs are in Meath. The joint local area plan covers both, so the zoning is read from one plan, but the application goes to the council whose county the site is in, and so does the commencement notice.

### Do I need a flood risk assessment for a site in Maynooth?

Where the site is in or near a flood zone on the OPW maps, or beside the Lyreen or another watercourse, the council will usually ask for one with the application. A look at the maps and the site before the layout is drawn tells you whether you do.

### Can you design the roads and drainage for a housing scheme in Maynooth?

Yes. Estate roads, surface water and foul drainage, SuDS, water mains and the Uisce Éireann applications, designed to the council's taking in charge standards so the scheme can be handed over when it is finished.
